Ovarian Cysts: Risks And Complications

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

From Ovarian Cysts and Fibroids

Women suffering from ovarian cysts are more concerned about the risks and complications of ovarian cysts, rather than for the disease itself. These concerns are not ill founded as ovarian cysts can cause many upheavals in the life of a woman because of the resulting complications. In order to avoid these complications and to seek appropriate treatment, an understanding of the risks and complications associated with ovarian cysts is essential.

Understanding ovarian cysts:

Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sacks, which are formed within the ovary. Cysts, which are bigger than two centimeters, are formally diagnosed as ovarian cysts. Many ovarian cysts are functional in nature. That is, they are beginning and rarely ever cause complications. However in some cases, the cysts may develop certain complications. Risks and complications of ovarian cysts depend on the type of cyst and the stage of treatment. Some types of risks complications, which are associated with ovarian cysts, include the following.

  1. Ruptured ovarian cyst: This is one the most serious form of complication. Ruptured ovarian cyst can lead to internal bleeding and in some cases it can be very dangerous. Ruptured ovarian cyst can cause hemorrhage, which requires immediate medical attention.
  2. Ovarian torsion: Sometimes, there is also twisting of the ovary, which can lead to infertility. Ovarian torsion may disturb blood supply to the ovary as well. This leads to another complication called as ovarian necrosis, which leads inflammation and septic shock
  3. Peritonitis: Pertitonitis is the inflammation of the mucus membrane. As this membrane lines the abdomen cavity, it can cause excruciating pain and in some cases the resulting complications can be life threatening.
  4. Infertility: Infertility caused by ovarian cysts can be temporary or permanent depending upon the extent of the damage. Hence, women suffering from ovarian cysts and those desirous of starting a family should take ovarian cysts really seriously.
  5. Cancer: In rare but significant instances, ovarian cysts may even turn cancerous. The patient will then require the usual cancer treatment along with surgery, where generally both the ovaries are removed.

Besides these serious complications and risks, ovarian cysts also lead to excruciating pain and hormonal imbalance. This can affect the mental and emotional well being of the patient as well. However, conventional medicine very rarely pays attention to the mental and emotional complications that may develop because of ovarian cysts. The treatment options can cause many side effects like loss of fertility, weight gain, and reoccurrence of stronger cysts. Therefore, many women find it difficult to cope with the demands of the conventional treatment, which can worsen an already difficult condition.

Side Effects And Disadvantages Of The Conventional Medical Approach To Treating Ovarian Cysts

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Ovarian cyst has become a common gynecological problem. However, this condition is very traumatic for women who have to undergo the conventional medical treatment for getting relief from this chronic disease. The conventional medicine approach to ovarian cysts is the most common approach, which is used when treating this disease. However, the limited treatment options and the resulting stress can also be too much for a woman to handle. Therefore, more and more women are turning towards alternate forms of treatments for curing ovarian cysts.

Understanding conventional medicinal approach:

Conventional medicine approach to ovarian cysts is very simple and straightforward. There are three stages involved in conventional treatment of ovarian cysts.

  • Understanding the symptoms: There are certain textbook symptoms of ovarian cysts condition, which include irregular menstruation, pelvic pain, infertility, and more. The patients are asked to keep a tab on these symptoms so that the condition can be diagnosed as soon as possible. However, sometimes, ovarian cysts do not give rise to any symptom. Hence, they can be discovered accidentally during routine gynecological examination.
  • Diagnosing ovarian cysts: There are different ways of diagnosing ovarian cysts. Besides understanding the symptoms of the condition, the practitioner will also make use of Endovaginal ultrasound, CT scanning, blood test, Laproscopy and many other forms of tests to conform his suspicions. Like the treatment, the diagnosis stage of the treatment can be equally traumatic.
  • Treatment: The treatment for ovarian cysts will depend upon the type of the cyst and its nature. If the cyst is benign, little or no treatment is required. However, in the case of serious condition, conventional medicine will recommended the following forms of treatment
  • Birth control pills: Birth control pills stop ovulation. They therefore repress ovarian cysts. They can also reduce the size of the follicles and help in reducing the size of the existing cysts.
  • Surgery: If the cysts are cancerous or if there are any other complications, then surgery is recommended. Surgery will again depend upon the type of cyst and the resulting complications. Sometimes, only the cyst is removed. However, it is not very uncommon to remove the ovaries to get rid of the cyst.

Besides the above, pain relievers are also given to provide relief from the pain caused by the cysts.

Disadvantage and side effects of treatment:

There are many disadvantages and side effects of conventional medicine approach to ovarian cysts. Birth control pills can cause prolonged infertility, even when the treatment as been discarded. Also, the conventional treatment does not fully cure ovarian cysts and the surgery may also increase the chances of ovarian cysts in the long run. Hence, conventional medication is not considered to be an appropriate form of treatment for ovarian cysts. As the disease is very complex, a multidimensional approach is required to deal with the disease. This is provided only by the holistic approach. Unlike conventional medicine, the hholistic approach targets the root causes of the disease and not the symptoms. Hence, holistic approach can cure ovarian cysts completely and can provide long-term relief, a task at which conventional wisdom shows its limitations. Therefore, when it comes to curing ovarian cysts, holistic approach is the best form of treatment.

Sometimes, ovarian cysts come to light only during routine medical or pelvic examination as ovarian cysts may continue to exist without any symptoms. A woman suffering from possible ovarian cyst condition is asked to pay attention to the following symptoms, which are generally associated with the condition.

The Real Cause Of Ovarian Cysts

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

From www.ovariancystsandfibroids.com

Ovarian cyst is a collection of fluids, which is surrounded by a slender wall within the ovary. Ovarian cysts raise concern among many women, especially in childbearing age. While a majority of the ovarian cysts are simply functional in nature, some ovarian cysts can turn out to be cancerous. As the first step of correctly diagnosing and treating ovarian cysts is to locate the cause of the disease, it is essential to understand the possible causes of ovarian cysts. However, there is no single cause of ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts can be triggered by a variety of primary factors and secondary factors. It is imperative to understand these different factors in order to seek appropriate treatment.

Primary factors of ovarian cysts:

There are many primary factors, which lead to ovarian cysts. These factors should not be isolated however, as sometimes the combination of these factors can together lead to the causes of ovarian cysts.

  1. Genetic predisposition: Genetic predisposition is often considered to be the primary cause of ovarian cyst as research has shown that the genetic pattern of women who suffer from this chronic condition is different as compared to women who never get ovarian cysts or PCOS. However, this should not be a death warrant as many times the genetic characteristics can be modified with the help of environmental factors and proper lifestyle related changes.
  2. Poor dietary choices: Different types of food including the ones rich in carbohydrates, junk food toxic food and acidic food can bring about hormonal imbalance and can weaken your immune system making you more vulnerable to ovarian cyst. Similarly diet rich in sugar and low on fresh vegetables can make the task of flushing out toxins difficult thereby aggravating ovarian cyst problem.
  3. Weak immune system: A weak immune system invites trouble, as it is not able to put up a natural fight against ovarian cyst triggers. Many factors including dietary factors and sleep deprivation can lead to weakened immune system.
  4. Insulin resistance: High level of insulin can stimulate ovarian androgen production, which leads to the production of male hormones. This reduces the serum sex-hormone binding globulin or SHGB. The SHBG can in turn aggravate the ovarian cyst condition to quite an extent.
  5. Failed ovulation process: Sometimes, the ovaries fail to release egg on a monthly basis. This fails to produce progesterone and brings about hormonal imbalance. This can then lead to the formation of ovarian cysts.

Besides the above primary factors, toxins in liver and even environmental toxins can aggravate ovarian cysts. Hence, ovarian cyst condition is not a simple one to understand or treat. Conventional wisdom blinded by hackneyed forms of treatment cannot treat and cure ovarian cysts. To treat this complex disease, a multidimensional view adopted by the holistic approach is needed. Holistic approach is also effective as it deals with a variety of factors and manages to find out the root cause of the disease. Then, systematically with a comprehensive method, the practitioner can help you to bring about many lifestyle changes, which can aid in treatment. Hence, when it comes to curing ovarian cyst, a holistic approach is required to understand the causes of ovarian cysts and to treat this condition in a scientific and holistic manner.

Acupuncture For Fertility: Appropriate For You?

Acupuncture for Infertility – Tracing Its Roots

Acupuncture, which originated in China, is over a thousand years old.  In the West, many people in the field of medicine consider it a valid procedure for treating an array of ailments.  It can help improve the skin, relieve muscle stress, and eliminate smoking habits, among many others.  Researches show that acupuncture greatly helps couples who are having a hard time making a baby.

How The West Sees It

Despite its popularity, a lot of Westerners still doubt the effectiveness of acupuncture.  Many consumers are reluctant to try acupuncture due to a lack of scientific validation.  The National Institutes of Health in the US says that researches are currently being conducted on the issue.

Hazards To Health

Acupuncture is generally painless when it is done by a highly-trained professional.  Very few patients experience adverse effects.  Some of the usual risks linked with acupuncture include minimal bleeding, organ puncturing, broken or forgotten needles, and the spread of infection.  You can do away with these if a professional practitioner does the job.  However, acupuncture is not recommended for individuals who use blood thinners or having bleeding disorders.

A Solitary or Complementary Process

Acupuncture may be used as a single procedure to complement fertility treatments.  It is also viewed as greatly complementary to modern fertility procedures.  Used as a single method, acupuncture brings positive results to people who have functional reproductive problems, like intermittent ovulation.  By itself, effectiveness in treating structural problems, as with sperm duck blockage, could be weak.

Some acupuncture practitioners say that acupuncture treatments are best complemented by the use of Chinese herbs.  If you are under medication, check your doctor before taking herbs.  There are certain herbs that may inhibit the action of fertility procedures and drugs.

Acupuncture for Fertility- Is It Truly Effective?

How acupuncture works as a cure for infertility is still debatable.  However, many practicing acupuncturists assert that this ancient treatment normalizes the body’s system.  It boosts the flow of blood into reproductive organs and helps stabilize hormonal functions.  As a result, ovarian function is improved among females and sperm production is increased among males.

Acupuncture has been found to benefit women who are using it in conjunction with therapies that aim to increase fertility.   There are people who believe that acupuncture relaxes women when they undergo stressful fertility procedures.  Recent researches show that a woman undergoing in vitro fertilization has a higher chance of conception if acupuncture is introduced into therapy.

How To Choose the Best Practitioner

Doctors looking to enter the field of acupuncture will need to complete around 300 training hours to receive a certification.  Professionals looking to branch out to acupuncture need to pass the board exam first and complete between 2000 and 3000 hours of training to be licensed in this field.

The number of people who are practicing acupunture is continuously increasing.  To make sure patients land in good hands, here are some things that must be taken into account.  A background check on the selected acupuncture expert must be done prior to agreeing to any procedure.  Any practitioner must be licensed in the state or town where he or she is providing services.Great recommendation sources for acupuncturists would be friends and family members who have tried the procedure.

Before jumping into the procedure, patients should always ask about the possible total costs to be prepared.  It’s great to know that some insurance providers will pay for acupuncture treatments.

What You Can Expect

More than one acupuncture treatment is needed to get desired results.  To get the most out of acupuncture, patients usually go through a series of visits that can run from several weeks to a few months.  Patients should expect each visit to their acupuncturist to be at least an hour long, with time for discussion of lifestyle and present health condition, as well as thoughts and queries about the process.

Symptoms of this condition include a stabbing pain, usually at the lower back. There are medications that can help relieve the ovarian cyst pain but there are some women who prefer the natural approach. Here some natural ovarian cyst relief techniques.

The most common and most effective natural ovarian cyst relief is by applying heat to the area affected. A heating pad will almost always do the trick so having  one at home (and even at work) is a good thing to have. Another great way to relief ovarian cyst pain is by taking a long hot path.

Another technique you can do is to change the way you eat. There are certain food items that can intensify the pain and there are some that relieve the pain. It is advised to stay away from spicy food, because it contains certain chemicals that will make the pain even worth. Also avoid food that is rich on estrogen such as red meat, diary products and tomatoes. in addition stay away from food that contains iron. Cancer cells actually feed on iron so avoiding them is really important.

The pain you experience from ovarian cyst is hard to deal with. However, following these tips can somehow lessen the pain you feel. If the pain is truly unbearable, talk to your doctor and ask for further techniques in relieving the pain. It might be a good idea taking over the counter meds for pain relief - However, if your doctor wants you to take prescription drugs try to avoid taking them. As many times pain medication has addictive qualities and other unwanted side effects.

Simple functional ovarian cysts will not require any remedy. Most likely your doctor will tell you to take birth control pills and this in most cases solves the problem.

Ovarian Cyst Cancer

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Cancerous Ovarian cysts are basically the variety of essential liquids protected in a very thin walled sac, inside an ovary or on the lateral side. Any ovarian follicle, that is greater than 2 centimetres large is an ovarian cyst. Ovarian cysts produce sudden sharp discomfort, heaviness, pressure, tenderness of breasts, intermittent periods, lethargy, infertility, head aches and much more problems. Usually, some of the ovarian cysts go away soon after a small number of menstrual cycles. Removing ovarian cysts might possibly be used as an choice nevertheless on many occasions it becomes necessary. In the majority of conditions the cysts gets to be large, solid, badly processed and brings about pain, which can be overwhelming. In these situations, the removal of cysts proves to be a path you must take. Medical procedures of the cyst is needed should the cyst appears to cause cancer. For old women it has to be, taken out right away since the cyst develops with the age. So surgery is, needed in terms of these cases. Effective Treatment for Ovarian Cysts

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Let’s start with the most common ovarian cysts. Most women have physiologic or functional cysts which are easily treated with natural methods. They are termed like that due to their characteristic of appearing and disappearing depending on the body's hormonal influence. Follicular cysts are hands down the most frequent types of cysts that occur in the ovaries. The ovary may have more than one cyst and the size may vary between a few millimeters to 15 centimeters. A physiologic cyst can be formed by any normal ovarian follicle at any given cycle. The usual size of cysts are from an inch to two.Three to five centimeters in size is common.

Follicular cysts are not “tumors”, which are actual abnormal cell growths or lumps on the ovary. Follicular cysts are simply thin fluid-filled little sacs, called cysts, which develop from follicles and are under the influence of hormone fluctuation in your body. Regardless whether ovulation occurs or not, the sac will simply be taken up by the ovary. But this follicle sac can swell up with fluid, forming a cyst. These cysts might last just a short time and popping or they can keep swelling or stay the same size and simply refuse to go away.

Before deciding on what treatment is needed, it is crucial to understand the difference between the types of cysts and to understand that some of them are not cysts at all.A few may be tumors that are empty inside and may look like cysts on an ultrasound or scan. What you read here will help you understand what your doctor needs to do to make sure you do not have ovarian tumors, benign or malignant. After identifying the type of physiologic cyst, the path to choosing the the treatment will be much simpler and safer.

What are the typical signs of follicular cysts? There are other symptoms that can occur aside from abnormal uterine bleeding, pain from fluid and blood leaking out. These complications can occur with any ovarian cyst or tumor as it grows. Any ovarian mass can cause a vague pressure sensation, constipation due to pressure on the rectum, urinary frequency or urgency due to pressure on the bladder and severe pain due to twisting of the ovary and cyst around itself (called torsion). The cyst has grown to a point where it has caused the ovarian blood vessels and ligaments to twist like a pretzel and calls for a surgical emergency. The pain can be acute, unrelenting and normally causes nausea and vomiting.

What about contraceptive pills? Do they help treat functional cysts? The short answer is no, they only help prevent future cysts from forming. Does this work? Taking oral contraceptive pills reduces the volume of hormones which activates the ovary coming from the pituitary gland. When the gonadotropins are scaled down, ovulation does not happen and you will not get pregnant. Basically, what this all means is that your body is “tricked” into thinking it is already pregnant, so your ovaries think it is unnecessary to ovulate. Oral birth control pills have a 99% chance in the prevention of pregnanacy. This is EXACTLY how they prevent functional ovarian cysts from forming too. No ovulation, no follicle, no cyst. So, your doctor may still give you “the pill” to prevent future cysts from forming. Oral contraceptives equally functions as a inhibitor of cysts and pregnancy prevention. Obviously, they do, and there is good scientific proof for it.  With all of this out of the way, you can now consider natural options as well.

Ovarian Cyst Symptoms - Hidden Signs and Natural Treatment Methods

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Ovarian cysts occur rather frequently in women.  Some experience one or two symptoms.  Others none until abdomen pain becomes acute.

Many cysts basically begin as the normal follicle that’s grown by ladies during their menstrual cycle.  If this follicle attaches and doesn’t release the egg during a period, then it becomes a cyst.  These follicle cysts usually vanish all alone and do not cause pain.

if the follicle does release its egg but seals itself back, then the cyst becomes a nuisance and probably a threat to the woman.  These cysts may vanish on their own.  However , they are capable of growing too massive for the small ovaries and ovarian tubes.  They fill with blood and push against the female organs, the bowels and / or othe bladder.  As this occurs, they may block the standard period flow causing patients to encounter irregular periods.  They may make patients feel discomfort or discomfort in their abdomen.  If this agony were incessant, most would look for help immediately.  Regularly this pain is discontinuous, occuring just before a period, during sexual relations or affecting the bowels or the bladder.  Sometimes patients with pain during stool movements, bladder Problems or spincter agony are essentially experiencing symptoms of these blood-filled cysts.

These cysts can even occur while carrying a child.  The egg is released to grow into a fetus but the follicle remains and grows into a cyst.

If the ovarian cyst remains lodged and continues to fill with fluids and blood, it may twist and turn, trying to fit into the miniscule space where it does not belong.  This is when the cyst becomes more unpleasant or essentially causes internal bleeding.  A sonogram can reveal the cyst, its size and its potential for harm.  A laproscopy, in which a slim instrument is inserted vaginally can permit a doctor to remove the cyst.

A third cause of cysts is endometriosis, in which uterine cells grow outside of your uterus.  Dermoid cysts form within the uterus when the egg leaves behind a trace of tissue that grows into a solid such teeth or bone matter.  The biggest and most agonizing cyst is called cystadenomas.  These fluid-filled cysts can grow up to a foot in diameter and may require surgical removal.  A symptom of these can even be an increased belly size.

When doctors perform laproscopy, they should decide if the cysts are simply liquid filled or if they contain solids.  The presence of solids indicates the need to test further for cancerous cells.  Solids may exist naturally
Forming tissues from the egg cell such a teeth or bone.  cancer should be tested for and eliminated as a possibility.

A cystectomy can remove the cyst without removing the ovary.  In cancer cases, a hysterectomy to get rid of the ovaries is often commended.
